For Jyan on FA as a thanks for translating Blacksad vol. 4 for me.

I took this as a chance to draw an anthropomorphized whale in a way different from how furries usually draw them.

I love his fin arms! Awesome character design. For some reason, I want to give him a hug. HEE! Turtle swim trunks!

Really nice work on the anthro orca.

Much better than the "furry" zoomorphic whale they draw.

I really like.

It just really bugs me that the female characters are humans with animal ears while the male characters are awesome anthros that actually look like their species. I thought that the bear characters from Arctic Nation were deer for almost the entire book. The female characters are also absurdly sexualized, especially the little girl from that same book, having huge pouty lips even though she was like five years old. .________________.

I love the art, it's just hard to get past the depiction of the female characters.

...You miss the point of what Guarnido does. Blacksad is not a story about furries. The depictions and the degree of animal features that Guarnido puts to each character has to do WITH THE CHARACTER of that character.

Is that from an author interview? That's an interesting explanation. So they're not anthropomorphic animals, they're humans that are being shown as animals as a kind of symbolism?

Exactly. Which is why all law enforcement are shown as dogs, why the colour of their fur reflects real segregation issues, why Weekly the news reporter is a ferret, etc.

Very interesting indeed. I prefer to use as much variance in anthropomorphism. You can choose which extreme from human to animal it can be.

How do furries usually draw them? Human with fins and tail tacked on, or do they go the merperson route?

The mostly draw them as zoomorphic, aka they have a human frame with orca part added to it. Quite the opposite of this one that look more whale than human.

Human body with like a ninja-turtle sort of head and pawed hands/feet. Sort of like how the go-to anthropomorphic bat for a furry is a dog with wings.
